Grips manual

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
READ THIS BEFORE USING YOUR GRIPS

Gymnastic equipment is designed for safety and should never be altered. Although grips have become standard equipment for gymnasts of all ages and appear to be simple equipment, alterations by the user or improper use can result in serious injury. Never alter any grip in any way. Important do's and don’t’s for your new grips:

DO- read instructions that come with your grips. Be sure your coach approves of the size grip you choose. Wash hands and wrists before trying on new grips. Inspect your grips before every practice for any loose pieces or tears. Replace your grips as significant wear becomes visible.

DO NOT:Do not pull or cut the finger holes. Do not use a wire brush on the dowel stitches. Do not swing on bars to check the fit or chalk up or write on the grips before checking the size with your coach.

Important information on proper break-in and fit of your grips:

FITTING YOUR GRIP

It is important to purchase the best size for your hands. To determine the size you need, buckle the grip on your wrist, but
DO NOT put your fingers through the hole. With your hand fully extended, the leather should cover all but the ends of your three middle fingers. If the finger holes are too small, they can be stretched slightly, but please observe our instructions given later. Never cut the holes to make them larger. Grips will stretch, and the heavier the gymnast and the higher the skill level, the more the grip will stretch. If you feel that your size and/or skill level will cause the grip to stretch and change size during break-in, choose a grip that is slightly small or chose one made of heavier leather.

BREAKING IN YOUR GRIP

Basic swing work is important and necessary work to break in our grip and form it to give you maximum holding power. DO NOT do full or difficult routines until your grips have been completely broken in. Give yourself time for the necessary break-in period by ordering new grips or leathers before your current pair wears out. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE ELSE TO USE YOUR GRIPS. Break-in will form your grips especially for your hands. Another user might find them difficult or cause them to become a poorer fit for you.

SAFETY CHECK

Every day and during long hard practices you should check your grips for any weakness that will lead to the leather tearing or any stitching that may be about to give out. Using water or other liquid on leather may cause extensive stretching, excess softening, and/or rotting. Never wear a grip that is too long!

AN OVER LONG GRIP MAY CAUSE GRIP LOCK AND RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY!

If any part of the dowel flap can make contact with the lower portion of the grip when the hand is around the bar, the grip is too long. lf your grip stretches to the point that it slips off your fingers, slides down beyond the position it should be worn in, or if the dowel slips to the side, the leather is too long.

ALWAYS CHOOSE THE CORRECT GRIP FOR THE APPARATUS ON WHICH IT IS USED. DO NOT USE A
WOMEN'S GRIP FOR THE UNEVEN BAR ON THE MEN'S HIGH BAR.

HOW TO STRETCH THE FINGER HOLES ON YOUR NEW GRIPS

It is important to understand that the finger holes are always cut a little small. You may need to enlarge them slightly. NEVER PULL, STRETCH OR CUT THE HOLE THIS WILL PROBABLY CAUSE THE FINGER HOLE TO TEAR OUT. (Improperly stretched holes can cause tears, and these leathers will not be replaced.) Enlarge the hole by reaming it slowly. Better yet, wrap fine sand paper around a wooden dowel or pencil and sand the bottom of the hole (not the top).

The work goes easier if you first soften the leather by rolling it in your hands or over the corner of a table or a narrow bar. This will also shorten the break in time.

USING THE GRIPS

Put the right grip on the right hand, the left on the left hand. The straps should be marked for the left and right hands. Put the ribbed ends of the bracelet into the ratchet buckle, pushing forward with your thumb. Raising and lowering the lever on the buckle should draw the strap tight (1). We recommend a firm fit to avoid chafing and callous formation. After practice or performance, you can unlock the bracelet by pressing on the small lever on one side of the ratchet buckle (2).
